Religious Education
With specific regards to R&W, the United Learning curriculum provides all children, with coherent and sequenced substantive knowledge (what they should know), opportunities for all pupils to see themselves reflected in the curriculum, but also to be taken beyond their own experiences with opportunities for children to become religiously literate. The curriculum adopts a scholarly approach to core disciplinary knowledge (how pupils think/ways of knowing) of theology, philosophy and social sciences, developing pupils' ability to hold different types of conversation. The curriculum encourages a curiosity and openminded approach to the worldviews of others and a reflective consciousness of their own worldview.
Intent | Why do we teach what we teach?
Pupils are taught using a 'worldviews approach' Our worldview is influenced by our life experiences and external influences such as media, our parents and our teachers. This provides pupils with the opportunity to see themselves in the curriculum but also to be taken beyond their own experiences. Pupils will become religiously literate in a range of religious and non religious beliefs. They will build their knowledge and understanding through three vertical concepts:
Sacrifice
Giving something up for the benefit of someone else is a recurring concept across religious & non-religious worldviews and takes many different forms. What motivates human action and what are the societal and personal consequences?
Knowledge & Meaning
One of the unique qualities of human intelligence through time has been our quest for knowledge and meaning. How have religion and belief impacted on humanity’s search for “Truth”? How do beliefs impact human behaviour? What is it reasonable to believe?
Human Context
Human beings exist in, and are influenced by, their place in time and their geographical, political and social context (Person, Time & Place). Everyone is different, so how have our diversities been influenced by our personal context? What influences a personal worldview?
A curiosity and open minded approach to the worldviews of others and a reflective consciousness of their own worldview.
There will be opportunities throughout the curriculum to connect significant aspects of religious and non religious worldviews.
Implementation | What do we teach and when?
When teaching R&W at Shakespeare Primary School, we block our teaching time to ensure robust coverage and deep understanding. The United Learning Curriculum is planned sequenced so that meaningful links are made between subjects, and the order of units allows these connections to be made.
When teaching R&W, we block our teaching time to ensure robust coverage and deep understanding. Throughout the blocked time, we use live marking, questioning, capturing pupil voice and recall tools (for example, Graphic Organisers) to formatively assess our pupil’s skills, knowledge, and progress. At the end of a block period, we use quizzes to summative assess, identify gaps and recognise patterns across classes, year groups and key stages. Across the year, we ensure retention through recall activities and low stake quizzes.
Children will have the opportunity to visit places of worship or have a visiting faith speaker as part of our partnership with PCFCD (Plymouth Centre of Faiths and Cultural Diversity) this will ensure that they are provided with opportunities to experience diversity beyond their own experiences . They will also experience close community links with our local church through visits and assemblies from Father David Bailey of St Francis Church, Honicknowle.
Impact
The impact of the curriculum on children's learning is monitored and assessed regularly. The RE lead will look at children's books, talk to children and observe lessons. The RE lead will share findings with all staff.
Teachers will monitor children's learning through key questioning, live marking and through fun pre and post learning quizzes.
The RE lead and teachers will share the children's learning through our social media Facebook page. This will include final outcomes of children's work, work in books, photos of visitors that have impacted children's learning and children showing their knowledge of a unit through the use of a Graphic Organiser.
