Catch Up Quickly
At Shakespeare, we know the importance of reading and want every child to succeed. But what do we do if a child needs to catch-up with their learning as they have fallen behind?
One to one phonics tutoring
Some children require extra practice to keep on track with their phonics learning so we provide additional tutoring. Quick and focused one to one tutoring will happen daily for identified children in order for them to build their confidence with their speed sounds and ensure they make good progress towards their individual goals.
Academic mentor
We are very lucky to have an academic mentor working with us. Our academic mentor provides individual daily tutoring in order to support some identified children with their progress in phonics and reading. We have seen some confident and proud children emerge from their daily sessions.
Freshstart
For those children in years five and six who need a little extra help, we use Freshstart. Freshstart supports older readers to build upon their phonics knowledge and supports them to read accurately and fluently.
Fluency project
Each term, a group of 6 children in Key Stage Two are selected to take part in our fluency project. For six weeks, these children work closely with an adult - reading and re-reading an age-appropriate text. The aim for the first weekly session is to develop fluent reading - this means with expression, paying attention to punctuation and without too many pauses. The second session always focuses upon developing a good understanding of the text by answering questions and exploring new vocabulary.
