Love of Reading
At Shakespeare, we want every pupil to love reading; to be able to make informed choices about the books they select and develop a firm foundation for the next stages in their lives.
We have planned our reading curriculum so that we help every child to develop their love of reading, whether it is an early picture book, modern day favourite or classic children's novel.
Our Reading Team have developed a core reading spine that enables pupils to access an expansive range of books during 'reading for pleasure' sessions. Reading for pleasure sessions take place every day after lunch and pupils love being able to listen to their teacher read and follow along with their own book if they choose to.
Please browse our current reading spines. We would love to hear any recommendations that you have!
Early Years ‘Super 6’ Reading Spine
In the Early Years we have developed our ‘Super 6’ Reading Spine. Each term, six quality books have been selected which enable us to foster a love of reading during our planned story-times and continuous provision. Our children engage with stories, including traditional tales, rhymes, multi-cultural texts, non-fiction books and picture only books so that they can develop a rich range of vocabulary and comprehension skills. These books also enable us to support children’s understanding of the world around them, broadening their experiences, linked to our themes.
Accelerated Reader
Accelerated Reader (AR) is computer program that helps teachers monitor and manage children's independent reading practice. Children choose books at their own level, read them at their own pace and then, when finished, quiz on the book. Feedback provided by the quiz allows the children and their teacher to select new books which perfectly match their reading ability ensuring all children make good progress in their reading throughout the school.
