Books Match Sounds
You child will bring different sorts of books home each week. It helps whether you know if this is a book your child can read on their own or whether this is a book you should read to them. The books sent home are accurately matched to the sounds your child is learning in school.
Story books
Read Write Inc story books will have been read three times in school within phonics lessons. Your child should be able to read this book confidently on their own. This book is a black and white copy of the book used in school.
Book Bag Books
Your child will also bring home a book bag book. This book is similar to the story book as it contains some of the same words and sounds but within a different story. This book is new to your child so they may need some support reading it. Inside each book, you can find guidance on how to best support your child when reading with them.
The children will come home with the same books for three days. This is so they can build their confidence and become more fluent in their reading. Re-reading books is essential to this.
Day one - first read focusing on decoding (sounding out)
Day two - second read focusing on speed and accuracy (fluency)
Day three - third read focusing on comprehension (reading with expression and answering questions to show they understand what they are reading)
Reading for pleasure book
Your child will also bring home a book they have selected from the library to enjoy. They may bring home a book they know well or a completely new book which you could read to them. We want all children to develop a love for reading and sharing books is a wonderful way to encourage children to love books.
