My reading journey at Shakespeare Primary School…
At Shakespeare Primary School we are committed to ensuring that all pupils will develop a love of reading through a range of high-quality texts. By the time our pupils leave school, they will be able to decode and read any word they encounter regardless of their ability. We recognise that reading is the key to accessing the curriculum and allowing all to achieve greatness therefore all children will be heard read a minimum of once a week.
Nursery | I will be immersed in high quality language, songs and stories daily. I will share stories with an adult in school every week (daily if I need to). I will engage in a range of listening activities and oracy activities in preparation for phonics and reading. (I may have BLAST/Intensive Interaction intervention to help me if needed) I will be immersed in a vocabulary and reading rich environment – allowing me to develop my early reading skills. I will start learning my initial set one sounds through RWInc and recognise these in different settings (in preparation for Reception) I will be able to take books home (wordless and sequencing) I will be read a range of nursery rhymes, poems and stories every day. Adults will speak to me using Blank Levels appropriate language. |
Foundation | I will read with an adult in school every week (daily if I need to). I have a phonics session at least once a day. (I may have BLAST/NELI intervention to help me if needed) I will know my set 1 and 2 sounds and be able to segment and blend words by the end of Foundation. (I may have 1:1 fast track tutoring or pinny time to help me if needed) I will take linked-RWI books home with me to read. I will take home other books for pleasure weekly alongside my RWI books. My teacher will share stories and rhymes with me every day. I will share a book with other children and an adult each week in a guided reading session to understand their purpose and relevance. My curriculum will be built around high-quality texts – Super 6. I will be immersed in a vocabulary and reading rich environment both indoors and outdoors – allowing me to develop my independent reading skills. I will read at home everyday with my parent and carers and work towards the Gold Standard Reading Award. Adults will speak to me using Blank Levels appropriate language. I will engage in RWI Talk through stories. |
Year 1 | I will read with an adult in school every week (daily if I need to). I have a phonics session at least once a day. I will know all my set 3 sounds by the end of Year 1. (I may have 1:1 fast track tutoring to help me if needed) I will experience a range of books at my reading level, containing sounds that we are learning. I will have a book to take home from my RWI group matched to the sounds we are learning in school. I will take home other books for pleasure weekly alongside my RWI books. I will complete the phonics screen check. I will hear and take part in a class story daily and also share picture books during English which support our writing. I will engage in RWI Talk through stories each week. I will read at home every day with my parent and carers and work towards the Gold Standard Reading Award. Our teacher will read to us daily, and we will hear a wide range of styles, genres and authors. I will have ‘Book Club’ in class weekly where we discuss our favourite books, new books and recommend books to our friends. |
Year 2 | I will read with an adult in school every week (daily if I need to). My teacher and other adults will guide me and ensure that I am choosing suitable texts more and more independently. I have a phonics session at least once a day. (I may have 1:1 fast track tutoring to help me if needed) I will continue working through the RWI reading scheme which builds on my fluency and comprehension. If I am still struggling with any sounds, I will continue to work on these in my assessed group, and also have 1:1 tutoring in the afternoon to close any gaps in my knowledge. Once I complete the RWI phonics programme, I will start reading novels and build on my understanding different text and VIPERS through our Whole Class Reading (WCR) sessions. I will take a star reader test half termly to ensure my reading range is accurate and allowing me to build on my reading skills. I will be able to complete AR book quizzes more independently. If I didn’t pass the phonics screen in Year 1, I will try again this year and pass after extra help and intervention. I will hear and take part in a class story daily and also share picture books during English which support our writing. I will engage in RWI Talk through stories each week.
